Biography of Jules Guérin (1919-1999) - Bouffioulx:
Jules Guérin was a Belgian ceramist from Bouffioulx, a village renowned for its centuries-old tradition of salt-glazed stoneware. Son of the famous Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramist Roger Guérin (1896-1954) and grandson of ceramist Willem Delsaux, he inherited a family know-how passed down through several generations.
After World War II, he took over his father's workshop and continued the technique of high-fired salt-glazed stoneware: firing at a very high temperature (around 2,660°F), to which sea salt is added to obtain a vitrified, waterproof, and resistant glaze.
Jules Guérin developed his own shapes and designs, sometimes inspired by modern art, stylized motifs, or zoomorphic representations. His pieces, produced between 1950 and 1970, are often signed by hand or stamped with “Guérin” or “Guérin Bouffioulx.”
