The 70th edition of BRAFA draws its curtain this year, ready to embark on its eighth decade. But do you know the history of this internationally renowned fair?
It all began in 1956, initiated by Charles Van Hove, then President of the Belgian Chamber of Antiquarians. Wishing to create an event where antiquarians could present their treasures to a knowledgeable audience, he laid the foundation for what would later become the Brussels Art Fair. The first edition was held in the Arlequin Hall of the Galeries Louise in Brussels. The event was an immediate success, attracting both collectors and art enthusiasts.
With its rapid growth, BRAFA moved in 1968 to the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, a prestigious venue that allowed it to accommodate an increasing number of exhibitors and visitors. In 1995, under the presidency of Christian De Bruyn, the fair opened its doors to international antiquarians, affirming its status on the European stage. The year 2004 marked a turning point: the fair relocated to the industrial site of Tour & Taxis, offering a larger and more adaptable space, capable of meeting the event's new ambitions. Finally, in 2008, the fair officially adopted the name BRAFA (Brussels Art Fair), signaling its desire to embrace a broader artistic spectrum, from antiquity to contemporary art.
Today, BRAFA brings together more than a hundred carefully selected international galleries. Prestigious art houses stand alongside promising young talents, creating a fascinating dialogue between tradition and modernity. Each edition is an immersion into art history, offering visitors the opportunity to discover masterpieces from different eras and cultures, in a refined and meticulously designed setting.
Once again this year, the fair has captivated audiences with its boldness and richness. Iconic works, surprising discoveries, and exciting encounters have shaped this edition. The enthusiasm of the public and collectors once again confirms BRAFA's key role in the international art scene.
Through this fair, we celebrate artistic diversity, its timeless heritage, and its emotional impact. BRAFA is not just an exhibition; it is a true immersion into the history and beauty of art.
