This Ethiopian processional cross, made from brass, is richly detailed and symbolic.

The central section features a Madonna and Child surrounded by openwork motifs and coloured inlays.

The side arms show finely carved musician angels, while a cherub adorns the top and bird motifs decorate the lower extremities.

The base, engraved with floral and geometric motifs, serves as a handle for processions.

Processional crosses, introduced in the 4th century under King Ezana and influenced by Coptic and Byzantine traditions, are made using the lost wax technique.

Used in Ethiopian Orthodox Church ceremonies, they symbolise the Christian faith and divine protection.

These works of art are preserved in churches, monasteries and private collections, perpetuating a lasting spiritual and cultural heritage in Ethiopia.
