Rare art nouveau bronze plaque.
Léon Gobert was a popular sculptor in Hainaut at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
A pupil and disciple of Charles Van Oemberg at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Mons, where he later became a teacher himself (1899-1934), he also attended courses at the Académie de Bruxelles, where he was particularly inspired by the teaching of Charles Van der Stappen.
Awarded the Prix Godecharle in 1895, he specialized in sculptures, busts, medallions and bas-reliefs depicting mining, misery and the working class. We owe him types of workers, portraits and subjects of regional inspiration.
Working mainly in bronze, he also practiced modeling, ceramics and direct carving.
He taught at the Institut provincial des Arts et Métiers in Saint-Ghislain and at the Académie de Mons.
He contributed to the magazine Savoir et Beauté.
