African statuette representing the theme of fertility.
Stylistic origin - stylistic feature associated with Songye art.
A major theme in African art, this statuette is highly stylized, but nonetheless bears distinctive markings that highlight the statuette's maternal elements: prominent belly, marked navel, heavy, maternal breasts, belt marking her belly and stylized headdress.
The reverse shows off the shoulders and shoulder blades in a rather unusual way. The motif of the belt marking the belly of the mother-woman statue is repeated.
Unlike contemporary statues and those offered to the general public as decorative objects, this fertility statue (dating from the 50s and 60s) contains the essential elements to represent the theme.
