Gilded bronze sculpture of two young women in the wind. One seems to be protecting the smaller one, who buries her head on her shoulder. The taller carries a basket of flowers. Their dress and hair are blowing away.
The bronze rests on a gilded terrace.
Signed on the terrace H. Moreau for Hippolyte Moreau*.
Very fine chasing.
Period: late 19th century. Style: Romantic.
Base diameter: 17.2 cm; Height: 45.5 cm, width: approx. 23 cm.
*Hippolyte Moreau: born in Dijon on April 01, 1832, died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on January 04, 1926.
French sculptor who trained first in his father Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau's studio, then in Paris with his brothers Mathurin and Auguste, where he studied with François Jouffroy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
From 1863 to 1914, he exhibited decorative subjects at the Salon des artistes français, most often inspired by the 18th century.
He won a medal at the 1878 Universal Exhibition and another at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
He mainly produced medium-sized works and decorative or everyday objects: vases, statuettes, bronze, regula or pewter cubby-holes.
Most of his works are kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.
