Bronze sculpture depicting a crowing rooster, entitled ‘Le Réveil' (The Wake-up Call) or Coq français chantant (Crowing French Rooster). The model was created by Auguste-Nicolas Cain, an animal sculptor, and produced by the Parisian foundry Susse Frères. The animal is depicted standing on a naturalistic terrace, its beak open in the act of morning song.
The piece bears the artist's signature on the terrace and the Susse Frères foundry stamp.
Biography:
Auguste-Nicolas Cain (1821-1894) was one of the leading French animal sculptors of the 19th century. A pupil of François Rude, then influenced by Pierre-Jules Mêne, he specialised in the representation of wild and domestic animals, treated with naturalistic precision. His works were regularly exhibited at the Salons from 1846 onwards.
The Susse Frères foundry, founded in Paris in the early 19th century, is one of the most renowned publishers of art bronzes. It distributed numerous models by Cain and other animal sculptors, ensuring a wide distribution of these bronzes among enthusiasts and collectors.
The model Le Réveil was exhibited at the 1883 Salon and was then included in the Susse Frères catalogue, which produced various editions of it in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
