Large hand-painted floral rose planter, made in ceramic by the Italian faiencerie Verbanum Stone Laveno circa 1900.
Nice condition, note a small chip on the peid (see photo, red arrow) and a star under the vase, not visible from the inside (see photo, red arrow), the vase is perfectly watertight (we tested it for over 2 days).
Società Ceramica Italiana di Laveno (S.C.I.), founded in 1856 in Laveno on Lake Maggiore, has left its mark on the history of Italian earthenware. Transforming an old glassworks into a factory, its founders Carlo Caspani, Alessandro Carnelli and Severino Revelli launched the production of fine earthenware for modest households, thus democratizing the use of ceramics.
The company distinguished itself by the early adoption of modern technologies, such as the reverse-flame kilns introduced in 1869 at its new "Lago" factory. These advances enabled increased production of high-quality pieces, ranging from utilitarian tableware to decorative objects.
In the 1920s, S.C.I. embarked on an artistic revival, collaborating with renowned designers such as Guido Andlovitz. The collections became models of modernity, combining aesthetics and functionality. This marriage of art and industry positioned Laveno earthenware as a national and international benchmark.
The visual identity of the S.C.I. creations is characterized by innovative motifs and bold colors, which meet with great success with the public. The opening of a ceramists' school in 1950-51 also reflects the company's desire to pass on its craftsmanship.
Renowned for its excellence, the Laveno pottery illustrates Italian industrial and artistic genius, leaving a lasting imprint on the history of European ceramics.
