“Henri Cazaux (1923-2011), Vallauris, sgraffito ceramic vase, 1950-1970“
Henri Cazaux was a member of the famous Cazaux family of potters originally from Ciboure (Basque Country), then working in Vallauris, notably from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Henri Cazaux belonged to the second generation of a famous family of potters.
He worked mainly in Vallauris after the Second World War, a period when Vallauris was flooded with creative potters (including Picasso, Capron, Foucard-Jourdan, Ramié, etc.).
Unlike his father édouard, who was more associated with Parisian galleries and salons, Henri sold mainly at local markets and at exhibitions in the south of France.
His well-known styles include :
Marked sgraffito (motifs etched into wet clay).
Use of deep blues, turquoise and earth tones.
Abstract motifs - often birds, fish or geometric shapes.
Glazes with speckled and marbled finishes, often with earthy brown or black washes.
Shapes: mainly vases, plates, lamps and bowls.
Height of this vase 29.5 cm.
