Maîtrise de Nimy, large covered vase in polychrome ceramic by Louis Waem, ca. 1940.
The piece has an internal crack (see photo).
The Maîtrise de Nimy:
Founded in 1943 under the direction of Raoul Godfroid, this was an artistic movement that aimed to elevate ceramics to the status of art. Louis Waem was part of this group of artists, alongside Fernande Massart, Georges Destrebecq, René Lemaigre, Pierre Monnaie, André Hupet, Irène Zacq and Geneviève Noé. The group gained international renown through exhibitions in New York, Amsterdam, Cairo, Milan and Lisbon, as well as through the visit of Rainier III, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, to Mons in 1947. They also won first prize at the Milan Triennale in 1948. The group was dissolved after the Nimy factory closed permanently in 1950.
