Chief Robotman by KO Yoshiya is the iconic robot that forms the basis of every collection, along with Tuxedo Spaceman, Alps Tva, Robot, Cragstan Mr Robot, Tulip Robot, Thunder Robot and a few other classic space toys.
It's been copied so many times by the Chinese that the originals have become hard to find.
Chief robot man comes in 3 colours: silver grey, blue (radical) and white (moon robot).
With its ‘bump and go' function, this skirted robot glides along the ground and, when it encounters an obstacle, it thinks, turns its head noisily and scans its surroundings, its lights flash, its antennae wind and then it changes direction. It's wonderful to see it in action.
Designed in 1962, it was in the Chicago Alden Christmas Book catalogues for $3.99. San Francisco's The Emporium Department Store charged $3.98, as does ours, which still has its label (another time, another price!!!!!).
Chief Robot Man is just magnificent, with his mouth squeaking like a Basquiat.
