Albert André Dandoy was born on April 3, 1885, in Namur. He was the fifth and last child of Auguste Dandoy (1839-1893), a landscape artist and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Namur. With such a father figure, it was only natural that he would show an early interest in painting and continue the tradition begun by his grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Dandoy (1799-1873), a painter and restorer of old master paintings. At school, however, he struggled with the rigor and authority of classical education. This led to his successive expulsions from the Jesuit college and the Athenaeum of Namur. Following this series of expulsions, his mother, Elise Gerondal, decided to enroll him at the Academy of Painting where her late husband, who died when Albert was only eight years old, had taught. It was in this establishment where, in contact with masters Vanden Eede and Merny, he perfected his skills for painting.
