Elegant composition with a bunch of flowers painted by Henri Robbe around 1840 on mahogany wood panel.
Roses, orchids and other flowers in a vase, signed H.Robbe lower right.
Painting in very good condition, framed (H 98cm x W 85cm) in wood and gilt stuck, also in good condition.
This painting was bought at Christie's in 2004 (see photo).
Biography:
Henri Alexander Robbe (Kortrijk 1807 - Brussels 1899) was a Belgian Romantic painter renowned for his remarkable compositions of still lifes, flowers and fruit, Hello! usually paints on canvas or wood panel.
Although he had initially chosen a career as a music teacher in Paris, he returned to Brussels in 1840 and was trained as a painter by his older brother, the already renowned painter Louis Robbe. He quickly made a name for himself as a painter of still lifes of flowers (often a composition with roses, peonies, lilies, irises, etc.) and fruit, which won him success and prizes at numerous exhibitions.
Most of his paintings are in private collections, and in many museums both in Belgium and abroad.
