Jacques Callaert was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1921 and died in Ostend in 1995. He was a figurative painter and draughtsman. He studied at the Ghent Academy. He was a pupil of Dierckens, Heylbroeck, Pauwels, De Cuyper and Cosyns. During the Second World War, he volunteered for service in the US Army. After the war, he perfected his portraiture at the Académie Libre de Paris/France. In 1952, he moved to Middelkerke. From 1959, he spent some time in the Congo. He painted (Congolese) landscapes, portraits, figures, seascapes, Italian landscapes and Parisian corners. He worked in the spirit of Impressionism. Jacques Callaert had his own gallery in Middelkerke. In 1959, he exhibited at Elisabethstad and in 1960 at Jordaens Gallery in Ghent. His works were purchased by the town of Aalst and the municipality of Middelkerke. He is mentioned in the Lexique des artistes visuels de Flandre occidentale vi, BAS I and Deux siècles de signatures d'artistes belges.
