CERABEL Baudour (Belgium), Large White Polar Bear Art Deco, porcelain / ceramic 1940.
In perfect condition
Certain sculptures made at Baudour at CERABEL are attributed to certain great Belgian animal sculptors of the Art Deco era, including Thierry Van Rijswijck (notably a 'rhinoceros', a 'lioness and her cub') and very probably Domien Ingels. Typical Art Deco subjects such as the monkey, kid, cat, bear, fennec, rhinoceros, giraffe, lion, lioness, elephant were produced there in high quality porcelain. The attributions of the collaborating sculptors still remain to be elucidated ...
CERABEL:
In August 1842, François-Joseph DECLERCQ, from the prestigious factories of Meissen and Sèvres, bought buildings in Baudour which housed La Société des Tuileries et Panneries à Vapeur de Baudour.
The porcelain factory knew a tremendous development and offered a very diversified range of porcelains: table services, current and luxury coffee services, sink fittings, vases, pyrogens, doll heads, insulators, statuettes of Saints, Virgins, animals, etc. We will also name a series of jazz dancers and musicians.
In 1927, the old FUISSEAUX factories will merge with the Société Anonyme des Pavillons. During this period, the forms of the services are almost identical to those of the De FUISSEAUX period with variations in the decor.
In 1934, the Belgian Ceramic Company Cérabel took over the management of the Baudour factory. The activities of the Cérabel Factory were very diverse: tableware (usual, luxury and hotel services), statuettes, vases, sculptures, laboratory objects, industrial porcelain, etc.
In 1977, Cérabel on the verge of bankruptcy stopped producing tableware. SA NGK takes over the factory to continue manufacturing electrotechnical porcelain and develop new ceramic products (catalytic converters, valves, cylinder heads, etc.).
