A rare stoneware vase in the hexagonal geometric Art Deco style, made by ROGER GUERIN in Bouffioulx around 1935.
Celadon-coloured, the crystallisations are remarkable for this period, the first to be fired in a gas kiln!
Signed Grès Guérin Bouffioulx, number 725, bears a rare XX mark.
Biography:
Roger Guérin (1896-1954) was a Belgian ceramist ( Bouffioulx ) of great renown in the twentieth century, especially from the Art Deco period and a friend of Edgard Aubry.
He was born in Belgium in 1896 and showed a keen interest in ceramics from an early age. He enrolled at the Université du Travail in Charleroi, where he took pottery classes with Willem DELSAUX.
Moving from the Art Nouveau period to Art Deco (between 1915 and 1945), he created vases and sculptures in GRES SALE GRAND FEU in a single firing (1300°). So he moved with talent in the 2 artistic styles of his time. His work is comparable to that of French ceramists such as Auguste Delaherche, Pierre Adrien Dalpayrat, Emile Lenoble and Léon Pointu...
From 1934 to 1939, he was appointed PROFESSOR at the Université Supérieur des Arts Décoratifs de la CAMBRE in BRUSSELS.
Perfect in his creations, he was contacted for numerous artistic collaborations and produced pieces for well-known artists and sculptors (Belgian and foreign) such as Marcel Wolfers, Cris Agterberg (Amsterdam School in the Netherlands), Thierry Van Rijswijck, Domien Ingels, Cris Lebeau (Amsterdam School in the Netherlands), Angelo Hecq... Vases with wrought-iron frames are the fruit of a collaboration with Fernand Carion, designer of light fittings and lamp bases for the French crystal manufacturer Muller Frères Lunéville.
He took part in numerous exhibitions, winning a silver medal at the 1925 PARIS INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF INDUSTRIAL AND MODERN DECORATIVE ARTS. His international recognition led him to exhibit at the JENSEN GALLERY in NEW YORK in 1947. His favourite shapes are timeless: the ball vase, the faceted & geometrical vase...
