Superb terracotta sculpture of a life-size seated cat, made in Austria around 1890-1910, in the style of the famous Goldscheider workshop in Vienna.
This 29 cm-high naturalistic cat is modeled in kiln-fired hollow clay, with a hand-painted polychrome finish that finely reproduces the texture of the coat and the shading of the body. The realism is striking, accentuated by the presence of inserted glass eyes, typical of late 19th-century Viennese production.
The base features a ventilation hole, typical of artisanal terracotta sculptures of the period. Although the piece bears no visible signature, the style, technique and materials strongly correspond to works from the Viennese school, and in particular to the Goldscheider circle.
The piece is in very good overall condition, with a beautiful original patina and traces of age consistent with its age. A rare and expressive piece, ideal for collectors of Art Nouveau, Jugendstil or collectible animals.
