Biography (Engelen-Marx: La sculpture en Belgique à partir de 1830):
Maurice Waucquez (Ixelles 1896 - 1990 Etterbeek) was an animal sculptor influenced by Art Deco, the horse being his favourite subject. A director of the family business ‘Jules Waucquez et Cie', he saw no way out for his passion as an artist. At home, he spends his time modelling horses, a childhood passion from when he used to ride the four-horse carriage in the Bois de la Cambre in Brussels. Maurice Waucquez's passion for horses and riders led him to produce an abundant series of drawings and representations of horses in meadows, horses out for a ride or galloping, accompanied by their foals. Wounded during the war, the sculptures in plaster, wood, bronze or stone were not executed by himself, but by Sylvestre in Paris or cast by Batardy in Brussels. At the Musée de l'Armée in Brussels, you can see the equestrian statue of King Albert, which won him the 2nd prize for a monument in Ostend. On avenue de Tervueren, square de Mérode, there is the Monument aux Artilleurs; on square Léopold II, the stele dedicated to the cavalry. He was a member of the Brussels ‘Etrier' club in the Bois de la Cambre. He donated most of his works to his family, friends and acquaintances on the occasion of memorable events. He rarely exhibited; at the Chapelle church in Brussels: a relief (1935); at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and at the Salon d'Art in Woluwé-Saint-Pierre (1947); Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris; Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels in 1947, Salon d'Art in Woluwé-Saint-Pierre in the 1950s.
