Ets. Jean Gauthier -Ezan
A beautiful pair of French art deco wall sconces around 1930-35. Polished solid brass mounts hold leaf shaped slip shades in molded-pressed glass. The shades have a frosted structured surface on the inside giving them a vivid appearance. On the outside the glass has gold enamelled highlights. The shades are signed Ezan france. In the mid 30ies the company of Jean Gauthier became wellknown for its glassware in bluish opalescent semi-crystal like we can often see on for instance Charles Ranc or Henri Petitot chandeliers of the late thirties.
The sconces are in excellent condition. I have cleaned and polished the brass mounts. On the pictures they hold their old B22 bayonet sockets. I rewired the sconces with E14 sockets so you can use our modern bulbs for them. I will add two good quality LED bulbs. For the US I will wire them with american candelabra base sockets. The shades are without chips or cracks. As always there is some wear of the gold enamel on the glass-surface. The sconces are about 34 cm high (13-6/16) and 20 cm wide (7-7/8).
The wall lights will be shipped by priority mail. Safely packed and fully insured. Free shipping offered for Belgium France Holland or Germany. A pick up in Rotterdam is possible as well.
Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first worldwar Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly
