Biography:
Achille Castiglioni (born February 16, 1918 in Milan and died December 2, 20021 in the same city) is an Italian designer of the twentieth century. Achille Castiglioni, like his brother Pier Giacomo, was subject to the material influence of his father, the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni.
Achille Castiglioni studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan and obtained his diploma in 1944. He joined his two brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo in their design studio in Milan. As for some of their young fellow architects (Ettore Sottsass or Marco Zanuso), the lack of architectural projects led the Castiglioni brothers to develop design projects for Italian manufacturers wishing to relaunch their activity after the war.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the Achille brothers and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni created a large number of objects for industrialists such as Flos or Zanotta. The death of Pier Giacomo in 1968 put an end to this fruitful collaboration.
While continuing his career as a designer Achille Castiglioni also devoted himself to teaching design at the Polytechnic of Turin and then at the Polytechnic of Milan.
Achille Castiglioni was rewarded with nine Golden Compasses.
Some of his creations, which have become design classics, are exhibited in many museums (MoMA, etc.) 2 and are still being produced.
