The label "Au petit dunkerque" indicates that this box was sold by Charles Raymond Grancher, a Mercier merchant who became the King's Jeweller in 1794.
Charles Raymond Grancher set up his business "Au petit dunkerque" in Paris in 1767 on the Quai Conti, then moved it to the Rue de Richelieu at the end of the 18th century, where it remained until 1813.
He was the purveyor of novelties to the royal family and the French and European aristocracy.
