Shaded reliquary case of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, a viaticum frame that could be used as a portable altar for the Last Sacraments. This display case shows the Virgin Mary and Child (in plaster) giving a rosary to Saint Dominic (left) and Catherine of Siena (right), the founders of the Dominican order. Underneath, this shadow box features a rotating scroll that can be turned using two handles on the right-hand side to scroll up or down one of the many images representing the 3 mysteries of the rosary (the Joyful, the Sorrowful and the Glorious). This display case is representative of the type of icon seen in many Carpatho-Ruthenian homes in the United States. The Joyful Mystery: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation in the Temple, Discovery in the Temple The Sorrowful Mystery: agony in the garden, scourging, crown of thorns, carrying the cross, crucifixion and death. The Glorious Mystery: the Resurrection, the Ascension, the descent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption, Mary's coronation All housed in a wooden case decorated on the front in the style of illuminations. Manufactured by copyright Koenig in 1912. An identical display case can be found in the Andy Warhol virtual museum. https://www.warhol.org/timecapsule/community-time-capsules/community-time-capsule-carpatho-rusyn-american/
