Gerrit or Gerard Hermansz. van Honthorst, also known in French and Italian as Gérard de la Nuit (Ghera della Notte) or Gérard des Nuits (Gherardo delle Notti), born 4 November 1590 in Utrecht, where he died 27 April 1656, was a Dutch genre and history painter and portraitist of the Golden Age.
In the 1620s, along with Hendrick ter Brugghen and Dirck van Baburen, he was one of the main representatives of the Caravaggesque school in Utrecht. His style later evolved towards classicism.
During his lifetime, he was already famous. He received commissions from Frederick V and Elisabeth, King and Queen of Bohemia in exile in the Netherlands, Charles I of England and Christian IV of Denmark, before becoming court painter to William of Orange-Nassau. Today, he is best known for his works from the Caravaggesque period.
