For : Jean Mathieu Nisen: Trained by Barthélemy Vieillevoye at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Liège, founded in 1835, then in Antwerp (1838), where he took painting lessons, he stayed in Rome from 1841 to 1847 thanks to a grant from the Fondation Darchis; he was a pupil of Johann Friedrich Overbeck. His work consists mainly of portraits (over 600), genre scenes and religious subjects. In 1868, he was appointed professor at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège, where he taught until 1881.
Jean Mathieu Nisen was a renowned portraitist of the Belgian nobility and industrialists of the time. The quality of these two portraits bears witness to this.
