Roman glass in the shape of a basket - Height: 20 cm. Period: Late Roman Empire, 4th - 5th century AD. Diameter of the foot: 5.8 cm.
This remarkable Roman glass, of fine size and rare elegance, is distinguished by its basket form, carefully blown and fashioned using the most refined glassmaking techniques of Late Antiquity. It has a two-tiered, ribboned handle, typical of certain luxury products from the Late Period. The body of the vessel is finely threaded around the body, creating a subtle, rhythmic relief decoration that bears witness to the skills of ancient glassmakers. Four decorative ribbons, arranged along a cardinal axis - North, South, East and West - adorn the body, giving the object harmonious symmetry and an almost architectural dimension. This structuring may suggest a ritual or symbolic function, or simply an aesthetic refinement intended to please a cultivated elite.
Conservation: Although the foot has been glued back together - a common restoration for objects from this period - the whole piece is in an exceptional state of conservation. Its rarity and quality make it a precious piece for both the history of art and the history of ancient techniques.
Provenance: Former aristocratic Antwerp collection of Doctor J. M., which has remained in the same family for over half a century, giving it a solid and prestigious provenance.
An invoice and certificate of authenticity will be provided to the buyer.
