Bowl with flared body and low foot (kylix), made of fine ceramics covered with a glossy black slip characteristic of Apulian production in Magna Graecia in the 4th century BC. The decoration on the outside of the body features a stylized deer, rendered in reserves or in lighter highlights, according to the techniques of local workshops.
This type of everyday or ritual tableware is part of the iconographic repertoire of Hellenized southern Italy, combining classical Greek influences with local traditions.
The animal represented could evoke themes linked to nature, hunting or religious symbolism.
Magna Graecia period, Apulia, 4th century B.C.
Diameter: 19 cm (excluding handles). 25.5 cm (with handles).
Height: 5 cm.
Conservation: Missing base ring, otherwise very beautiful.
Provenance: Dutch private collection formed between 1961 and 1980 by Mr. J.D.W.
