Perfume or salt bottle with chatelaine chain attributed to Giacomo Franchini and Pietro Bigaglia Murano glass decorated with colored inclusions, gold flakes and 3 murrines representing faces. Mounted in gilded brass. Stopper topped with a green glass cabochon. 19th century. Collector's item. Total height 7cm. Glassmaker, son of Giovanni Battista Franchini. Giacomo (often known at the time as Jacopo, the more traditional form of the name) worked with his father to develop millefiori canes, incorporating figurative and floral motifs. He is best known for his miniature portraits of Risorgimento heroes - Cavour, Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II - as well as Napoleon III and Emperor Franz Joseph. Suffering from mental problems, apparently due in part to his work on such a small scale, he was committed to an asylum in 1863 for the rest of his life.
