Circular in shape, resting on a slight heel. The presentation is more or less hollow, depending on the purpose of the plate. The plate is slightly flat. The bottom, called the “basin“, is surrounded by a more or less curved drop (or chute), bordered by a crown called the “wing“ by manufacturers or the “marli“ in silversmithing.
White background with polychrome decoration, with a rebus in a medallion in the center, foliage scrolls and gold fillets on the wing and border.
Size(s) : Diam. 23.5 cm,
Mark(s) : “Nast“ in red stencil,
Condition : PERFECT CONDITION,
Period: 18th century,
Observation(s) : Minor wear from use.
Comparable work : A service with a very similar blue band and “Rebus“ decoration is preserved in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
Rebus“ decorations are extremely rare in the 18th and early 19th centuries. They combined images and letters to form coded or amusing messages, which were very popular at certain periods, particularly in aristocratic and intellectual circles. However, this fashion remained limited and never really became widespread. These decorations were mainly made for custom orders or gifts, which limited their production.
Porcelain with rebus designs required a public capable of deciphering these mind games. They were often intended for a cultured elite, familiar with linguistic subtleties and visual references. This considerably reduced the spread of this type of decoration.
