Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right. Sight size: 25.8 × 33 cm - Framed under glass: 37.8 × 46 cm. Very good condition, bright, contrasting colors. Clean gold frame. Typical scene of Maghrebian orientalism: two veiled women converse near woven baskets filled with vegetables, a merchant draped in red stands nearby. Trees shade the stalls, a crowd dressed in white under a blue sky. Isidore Van Mens is a painter, draughtsman and watercolorist. Predilection for landscapes, figures, village views and North African characters. Often traveled to North Africa between 1923 and 1950, easily finding inspiration in the small villages and their inhabitants. Also traveled to Spain, China and the Dutch West Indies. Lived and worked for some time in Schaerbeek (Brussels-Belgium). (Paul PIRON - Dictionnaire des artistes plasticiens de Belgique des XIXe et XXe Siècles) Works in the Schaerbeek, Mons and Bois-le-Duc museums (Belgium)
