Brutalist style coffee table, designed by the Dutch artist Paul Kingma in the 1970s / 80s. The artist has used a variety of materials he has collected throughout his life and travels, here in Las Vegas as coins and various metal and bronze pieces included in mosaics of natural stones including shale. The table rests on a rectangular shale base based on a brass belt. The tablet is set with a double belt made of brass and nickel-plated metal. Biography: The sculptor, mosaic artist and Dutch designer Paul Kingma is best known for his ceramic and stone coffee tables, both dark and beautiful. Born in The Hague in 1931, Kingma studied art in Arnhem before studying at the Rijksakademie [Academy of Fine Arts] in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. During his career, he has been responsible for creating a number of sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven and Amersfoort. It is however in the art of mosaic that he has established his reputation, unique stones in his table tops, later incorporating fossils and petrified wood, not unlike the work of some artist like Ado Chale. In addition to designing his furniture, Kingma also taught sculpture and mosaics at the Institute of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. Kingma died in 2013 at the age of 81.
