Modular coffee table in the Brutalist style, designed by Dutch artist Paul Kingma in the 1970s.
The artist used a variety of materials that he collected throughout his life and travels, such as coins and various pieces of metal and bronze embedded in mosaics of natural stone, including schist.
The table stands on a rectangular schist base. The height of the top is adjustable (from 48cm to 67cm, see photos), and it can also be dismantled for easy transport.
This rare table is signed Design Kingma (see photo) and is in very good condition.
Biography: Dutch sculptor, mosaic artist and designer Paul Kingma is best known for his dark and beautiful ceramic and stone coffee tables.
Born in The Hague in 1931, Kingma studied art in Arnhem before training at the Rijksakademie [Academy of Fine Arts] in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
During his career, he has been commissioned to create a number of sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven and Amersfoort. However, it was in the art of mosaics that he established his reputation, using unique stones in his table tops and later incorporating fossils and petrified wood, not unlike the work of artists such as Ado Chale.
As well as designing her own furniture, Kingma also taught sculpture and mosaics at the Institute of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Kingma died in 2013 at the age of 81.
