Peacock Mnong or Jarai Vietnam.
Jarai ritual statues are mostly funerary and kept in enclosures. They are carved from very hard wood, known as Taeng in countries such as Malaysia. This wood is as hard as mahogany. It is yellow or fairly red in color, but turns gray as it ages. Rain will progressively erode the wood. The dominant themes found in these statues are the "mourners", who, as their name suggests, mourn their departed ancestors. They are depicted crouching, elbows on knees, holding their heads.
We also find men and women depicted with attributes reflecting their past life, for example soldiers with a colonial helmet or kepi, or women. The bird is also a recurring theme, enabling the living to make contact with the spirits.
Funerary enclosures are outside and enclosed by palisades. At the four corners, mourners are present, followed by other statues of departed ancestors.
