Superb small Europa bronze.
Typical of the 1910 period of the German school of sculpture.
The Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck foundry opened in 1851 in Berlin, Germany, under the direction of its founder, Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck.
It was one of Germany's most important foundries, known for its high-quality bronze castings.
Some of the first bronze sculptures to leave the foundry bore the "Gladenbeck" mark, with later castings over the years being marked "Gladenbeck und Sohn", "Akt-Ges v.H. Gladenbeck", "Akt-Ges Gladenbeck Berlin" or "Aktien-Gesellschaft".
The foundry cast many of the best-known bronze sculptures created by mid- to late-19th- and early-20th-century German artists.
In addition to meeting the generally modest casting needs of German sculptors, the foundry was also capable of casting large-scale bronze statues.
In 1913, the Gladenbeck Foundry founded the monumental Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1910, Gladenbeck founded sculptor Walter Schott's Untermyer Fountain of Three Dancing Maidens. The fountain is located in the Conservatory Garden, Central Park, New York.
The sculpture - set on a limestone base - depicts three young women holding hands in a circle "whose dresses cling to their wet bodies as if they were perpetually in the spray of the fountain". The fountain features three jets, two on the sides of the oval basin and a larger one in the center of the sculpture.
