Belgian collection.
The Luba (or Baluba in Tchiluba) are an ethnic group from Central Africa, originally from the Katanga region, more precisely from the valley of the Lubu river, from which their name derives (Baluba meaning "the Lubas"). Their history began with a secession from the Songhoy ethnic group, under the leadership of Ilunga Kalala, who had King Kongolo, revered in the form of a python, assassinated. In the 16th century, the Luba founded a kingdom structured around decentralized chiefdoms stretching from the Kasai River to Lake Tanganyika. These chiefdoms, with no strict boundaries, generally comprised a maximum of three villages. The Luba were also known for two types of sculpture: mikisi mihasi, depicting ancestors or spirits, and mikisi mihake, statues used to hold a magical charge, placed in the head or abdomen, to solve specific problems.
