African tribal art associated with the Byeri cult is characterized by a wide variety of anthropomorphic sculptures, intended to act as "guardians" and represent the ancestors. Among the Fang of Cameroon and Gabon, each family owns a "Byeri" or reliquary box, containing the bones of famous ancestors. Traditionally, these boxes were placed under the responsibility of the oldest member of the village, known as the "esa". They were often crowned with statues or heads symbolizing the guardians of these relics and bearing the name of the cult to which they were attached. Discreetly placed in a dark corner of the house, these boxes had the function of diverting harmful influences from family members. They were also used during initiation ceremonies for young members of the "So" society. During these events, the statues were taken out of their boxes and carried in procession, suspended by the posterior stalk. (Source: "Fang" by Perrois)
