In the west of Cà'te d'Ivoire, the Bété use masks whose style has been influenced by the glaé mask society of the Wobé and Guéré populations, who together form the Krou cultural group. These traditions were taught to them by the Nyabwa. Although warlike in origin, these masks also play a role in conflict resolution and are considered sacred. They are worn with amulets to protect the wearer from witchcraft. They are made available to the chief to reinforce his power through the application of customary justice.
