Jean Goffart was born in Amay in 1939 and died in Liège in 2006. Jacques Goijen's dictionary of painters from the Liège landscape school tells us: This painter, draughtsman and illustrator studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège. He won numerous prizes: the Prix Marie in 1955 and 1956, the Prix Watteau in 1958, and government grants in 1958, 1959 and 1969. After two stays in Paris and Nice, he had a succession of exhibitions. His landscapes and compositions are surrealist. In his works, architecture, castles, statues and monuments play an important role. Marc Renwart wrote: The unusual atmosphere of his paintings, with their icy fantasy and indefinable menace, led him, for a very short time, to share in the activities of the Fantasmagie group. His independent nature led him to lead a life on the fringes of society.
