Marcel HOCQ (1933-2021): « Lovers at the circus » 2003

Marcel Hocq was a self-taught Belgian expressionist painter, sculptor and ceramist, born in 1933. After gradually freeing himself from various artistic trends, his work finally conveys the full force of a renewed expressionism through solidly structured paintings whose sobriety of means accentuates the poetic atmosphere. Although he drew nostalgic inspiration from childhood memories (funfairs, merry-go-rounds, circuses, engagements and weddings), and had a fondness for animals (cats, goats and horses), the woman nevertheless remained at the centre of his preoccupations; he depicted her with an impassive, serene face, lit only by large, vague eyes staring into the distance. His paintings have been exhibited both in Belgium and abroad, and can be found in private collections (Belgium, France, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Spain) and public collections (collections of the Belgian State, the Walloon Region, the Province of Namur, and the towns of Kaprijke and Sambreville).
