Gaston Bogaert 'The old castel' surrealist painting, oil on isorel panel, 1977

Oil on isorel signed by Gaston Bogaert (1918 - 2008) on recto; countersigned and titled on verso.
The canvas depicts a ruined castle, set against a blue sky, in which nature has reclaimed its rights and brought new life in the form of a tree, observed by a black-clad visitor wearing a buzzard hat. It is dated 1977.
Dimensions: panel 41 x 33, framed 55 x 63 cm.
Schleiper walnut frame, probably chosen by the artist himself.

Gaston Bogaert ( Le Mans 1908- Etterbeek 2008) was a Franco-Belgian painter, architect and writer.
Bogaert uses symbols and unreal images to create a romantic and intriguing atmosphere. He prefers to move in a world with a strong sense of melancholy and nostalgia for the past. The relativity of life and the powerlessness to escape fate form the basis of a rich, refined and ever-changing content. Gaston Bogaert knows how to blend his very personal vision of the world of the unreal, of dreams and fantasy, creating mysterious tension or an oppressive sense of imminent threat, into unique paintings that reveal a whole philosophy. He is one of the exponents of Surrealism.
