Jacques Muller was a Belgian painter and engraver born in Brussels on April 22, 1930, and died there on May 19, 1997. His work is closely related to Expressionism, although it is not possible to label him with any particular school.
The painting proposed here was inspired by his stays in the United States.
In 1972, his first visit to New York exerted an irresistible attraction on a Jacques Muller still inhabited by the America of the liberators, a lover of cities and jazz. He brought back a harvest of sketches, engravings and paintings that reflect his happiness at being there. To live intensely every minute of this bustling life that, strangely enough, seems so familiar to him. That same year, he founded the Manus group with Gabriel Belgeonne, Mirko Orlandini, Michel Smolders and Gisèle Van Lange.
The years that followed were rich in creative activity and the exploration of new techniques. He took up silkscreen printing and published his first collection, Un jour à Ostende. He later uses this technique to create 30 variations on the theme of New York. A new group, Artes Bruxellae, is formed, comprising some thirty Brussels artists, including Jacques Muller.
In 1980, he travels to the United States, where he engraves and paints with watercolors in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. In 1983, he became director of the Académie d'Ixelles. Stays in the United States
In 1984, he stays in Arenys de Mar, Spain, where he engraves with Spanish and Japanese peers. He exhibited successively in Badadone and Huesca. and . In 1987, he published a tribute to Oskar Kokoschka for Europalia Austria.
In 1988, he returned to the United States with his wife. They stopped off in New York, San Francisco and Chicago, where he visited his painter friend Jan Beekman.
Numerous exhibitions.
