Paul Roussel entered the à?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Jules Cavelier, Louis-Ernest Barrias and Jules Coutan.
He was awarded the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1895 for the bas-relief David, conqueror of Goliath, brought in triumph to Saul, which enabled him to stay at the Villa Medici in Rome until 1899. He won medals at the Salons of 1896 (3rd class), 1898 (2nd class), 1900 (silver), 1909 (1st class) and prizes in 1909 and 1911. He exhibited out of competition in London, Brussels, Turin, Liège, Amsterdam and Ghent, and from 1906 became a member of the jury of the à?cole des Beaux-Arts and a member of the grand jury of the Salon des Artistes Français1.
On his return to Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and won numerous commissions from the State and private individuals.
Larroumet. The quality of the gilding on this bronze is very fine, as is the chasing. the foundry:Siot-Decauville was an art foundry active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
