Biography:
Eduard Hermanutz was born in 1902 in Ulm. He trained as a woodcarver in Ulm at an early age. From 1928 to 1933 he studied at the art academies in Munich and Stuttgart. Study trips took him to Rome.
From 1933 to 1939, Hermanutz worked as a sculptor in Luxembourg, where he created numerous Art Deco sculptures for the company Villeroy and Boch. From 1949 to 1977, he worked as a freelance sculptor in Ehingen. He created reliefs for fountains, restaurants and, for example, the mayor's reliefs for the meeting room of the Ehingen town hall. In the 1950s, he created numerous war memorials. After a few years in Ehgen, Eduard Hermanutz came into contact with the local carnival guilds and carved their popular Alemannic masks for them. The masks of the Wilden Weiber (1955), the Groggentäler (1956) and, in part, the Urdämonen were born. In 1977 he moved from Ehingen to Freiburg im Breisgau, where he died in 1992.
