This is a beautiful antique chessboard made of malachite and Carrara marble, complete with chess pieces.
The chessboard is square-shaped with a thin malachite border inlaid with brass fillets around both the board and the chess pieces made of malachite and Carrara marble. Add this lovely set to your collection.
Condition: In excellent condition, one of the bishops has slightly reduced in size; please refer to the photos for confirmation.

Malachite is an opaque green veined mineral believed to be a strong protector of children. It guards the wearer against accidents and shields travelers. Malachite has been used to promote business success and protect against unwanted business associations. It is a stone of balance in relationships. Malachite is always green, typically in veined tones ranging from very dark green to soft green. Most malachite comes from Zaire, Chile, and Australia. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used malachite for jewelry and ground it to use as eye shadow. It is used in amulets to ward off the evil eye. In the Middle Ages, it was used to protect children from witches and other dangers.
Carrara marble, sometimes spelled Carrera marble, is a type of white or blue-grey marble popular for sculpture and architectural decoration. It is quarried in the city of Carrara, in the province of Massa-Carrara (Tuscany, Italy). Carrara marble has been used since ancient Roman times; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed from it. Many Renaissance sculptures, such as Michelangelo's David, were carved from Carrara marble. For Michelangelo at least, Carrara marble was more prized than any other stone, except perhaps that from his own quarry at Pietrasanta.
