REMO PINTUS 'Couple with shells', a large (97cm) surreal fantasy sculpture made in 'polystirolo' in the 1970s by Belgian artist Remo Pintus.
Seeming to emerge straight from the seabed, this work depicts an embracing nude couple, the faces of the figures made of 'conch' (marine shell), bodies in polyetser and shiny blue, pink and pearly Polystirolo paste... (resembling candy paste, glass paste, etc.).
Signed with the artist's pastille (see photo).
Perfect condition.
Biography:
Remo Pintus was born in Iglésias in Sardinia (Italy) in 1938, to a Sardinian father and a mother from the Dolomites. At the age of eleven he dropped out of school, preferring to go to work. At the age of sixteen, after two years at the Miners' School, he worked in the coal mines of Sardinia until he was nineteen, finally arriving in Belgium in 1957. He worked in a variety of trades until he was twenty-three (1961), when Remo set up his own business as a freelance artist. Self-taught, he became a sculptor, modeller and painter with his own very Italian style.
Initially working in clay and papier-mâché, he later discovered new materials, notably polyester and polyurethane foam.
An avant-garde artist, he worked with 'polystirolo', stretching imposing masses of plastic paste that he wrapped around his sculptures and other busts (male, female, sometimes asexual) in a powerful, surrealist and futuristic way, ultimately expressing his own emotion and sensitivity.
A pioneer in this mastery of the 'Polistirolo', he was awarded a silver medal for his six works exhibited at the XXXVIIth Salon d'Arts Plastiques de la ville de Béziers organised by the Société des Beaux-Arts.
"The artist must be an innovator, and what I will bring to art will be the material, the ever-dynamic forms, the sought-after chromatisms...". (Interview with Jeanine Rivais)...
