"This interplay of borders, which he has mastered, allows him to maintain osmosis in what he calls 'LIBERTY'."
French painter, sculptor and poet, born in Hanoi (Vietnam) in 1938, he spent his childhood in Indochina and his adolescence in Africa. Influenced by Burgundian aesthetics, the Flemish Primitives and the Italian Renaissance, he excelled in the fine arts through his various modes of expression: painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing and lithography.
From exhibition to exhibition, the painter doubles as a poet, using aesthetic metaphor to define a personal universe faithful to his adherence to the Manifesto for Baroque Romanticism. The Centre d'Art Contemporain de la Villa Tamaris, a prestigious venue that has welcomed some of the world's greatest artists, dedicates a memorable retrospective to him, marking an essential milestone.
Aesthetic approach:
Inspired by the classical iconography of beauty, in which the representation of the male and female body is excelled, Charles-Louis La Salle's work uses canons of beauty associated with the characteristic techniques of representation of veils specific to Rogier Van der Weyden, the Flemish master of the 15th century.
Combining emotional imagery and masterful technique, the painting is unambiguous, yet allows for a detachment between aesthetic form and image meaning. Navigating the border between the structured model and its plastic dematerialization, Charles-Louis plays on the moment when he frees the viewer from the constraints of plastic knowledge, beauty or the aestheticism of art.
Inspired by the artists of his time, both friends and acquaintances, Charles-Louis plays with words, deconstructing space in the manner of the Cubists, while retaining the casualness of his line, fabrics and even bodies.
