Biography:
Paul Guth, pseudonym of Auguste Guillaume Guth, was a French cabinetmaker, born in 1878 in Oron and died in 1918 in Laxou.
He moved to Nancy around 1903, where he opened a furniture factory in the tradition of the école de Nancy (Louis Majorelle, Emile Gallé, Eugène Vallin..). His work consisted of a number of small pieces of inlaid furniture in the Art Nouveau style (consoles, sellettes, tea tables, etc.) as well as larger pieces such as beds and desks. Most of his furniture is inlaid signed "Paul Guth" in marquetry.
The Nancy School spearheaded Art Nouveau in France, whose main inspiration came from plant forms (ginkgo, iris, lily, umbel, hogweed, water lily, thistle, cucurbitaceae, etc.) and animals (dragonflies, butterflies, etc.). This alliance is based on extensive research into the use of glassware, ironwork, steel and wood, to bring beauty into everyone's hands and bring art into the home.
