The Gelas double-top mandolin from 1927, numbered 5947 and stamped, is an exceptional collector's item. It has a teardrop shape with an inlaid soundboard, a decorated rosette and a special bridge protected by a leather plate. The ebony neck is inlaid with white dots, and the headstock is split with two rows of tuning keys. The back is made of figured wood and the construction details show exceptional care. Jean-Baptiste Gelas, born in 1855, revolutionised the mandolin with his double-top design, improving projection and sound clarity. His innovations, patented in the 1920s, made the instrument popular with musicians. Gelas, trained as a luthier, introduced innovative designs and left a lasting legacy. His mandolins are sought after for their exceptional quality. He died in 1938, leaving an indelible mark on lutherie. The 1927 Gelas mandolin combines technical innovation with elegant aesthetics, representing the craftsmanship of the period.
