The work Le Débardeur d'Anvers by Belgian social realist sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) grew out of an initial abortive vision of a monument to labor. Influenced by social realism and Hellenic art, Meunier abandoned the proletarian figures to immortalize an Antwerp port worker in 1890.
This bronze statue depicts a stevedore in a classical posture, dressed in his working clothes and wearing a neck protector. Far from misery, the man radiates pride and inner nobility, transformed into a kind of popular divinity.
The wax sketch was presented in Brussels in 1885, followed by a plaster version in Paris in 1889. The first bronze cast was acquired by the French state in 1890, and further examples were made for Antwerp (a maritime symbol), as well as Scandinavian, Germanic and South American cities.
The original has adorned a bridge in Germany since 1910. A replica, named L'arrimeur belge, was donated to a South American nation. Rooted in social realism and naturalism, with a symbolic dimension, the work celebrates the dignity and strength of the worker, elevating manual labor to a noble subject.
