Important bronze of the lawman Jules Destrée, Pierre de Soete, 1930, unique piece, probably a commission, the foundry stamp is difficult to decipher.
Jules Destrée was a Belgian politician and doctor of law, born in Marcinelle on August 21, 1863, and died in Brussels on January 2, 1936. A bourgeois humanist, the trials following the strikes of 1886 determined his commitment to the Belgian Workers' Party, the forerunner of the Socialist Party.
Pierre de Soete (1886-1948) was orphaned at the age of fourteen. He enrolled at the Molenbeek Academy of Drawing, while learning modeling on his own. He apprenticed at the Compagnie des Bronzes and met sculptors such as Julien Dillens, Constantin Meunier and Jef Lambeaux. Working full-time as a sculptor from 1924, he received numerous commissions, including for war memorials. He excelled in subjects such as maternity, sport and dance.
