Reinhard Schnauder was born in Plauen, Vogtland.
He was the son of woodcarver Julius Schnauder, who lived in Dresden from 1865 to 1880.
From 1875 to 1876, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Ernst Hähnel and his close colleague until 1881.
From 1886, he worked independently in his own studio in Dresden. In 1886, he became a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche and the Dresden Art Cooperative.
Reinhard Schnauder was the father of sculptor Richard Georg Schnauder.
